The Breakfast Burrito

breakfast burrito postpartum

You’re probably wondering why a postpartum doula is blogging about breakfast burritos.

One, they’re really good.

Two, they’re easy to make.

Three, you can fill them with all kinds of deliciousness.

Four, they are hands down the’ #1 breakfast food request. by our clients (right up there with our Fruity Fall Breakfast).

When new parents enlist my services for overnight care, I let them know that if all goes well with their new baby and baby sleeps for a solid stretch, I can make them some sort of breakfast to warm up.

THEIR EYES LIGHT UP.

The excitement is evident. There will be breakfast. There will be something more than a yogurt, granola and a banana. There will be something worth reheating and tasty.

For new parents, this may perhaps be THE BEST NEWS EVER—-besides baby sleeping through the night, of course.

Here’s a little story about how breakfast burritos became a thing for our clients:

A bleary-eyed, hungry, breastfeeding new parent really enjoyed the food I had been preparing for her breakfast. She was tired of oatmeal, yogurt and protein bars. I had already made an egg casserole, baked pears with granola, and apple crisp. Now what? They had not gone to the store for a couple of weeks and only had 3 eggs, 1 Yukon Gold potato, 1/2 an onion, whole garlic, shredded cheese and a few small flour tortillas. You know what sealed the deal? The big beautiful jar of salsa in the fridge door.

That night the birth of the postpartum doula go-to breakfast was born:

THE BREAKFAST BURRITO!

You see, making burritos was in my wheelhouse. Back in 1981, I worked at Taco Time and rolled 1000’s of burritos. Now, I don’t want to brag, but I’m a pretty mean burrito roller. In fact, I think my burrito rolling skills have carried over into my mad swaddling skills.

Tortillas are the “Swaddle blanket” of delicious breakfast makings after all.

Are you salivating yet? Are you a hungry new parent?

What are you waiting for?

Find a postpartum doula that is willing to do a little meal prep on an overnight shift (like the doulas of Family Tree Doula Services), have them swaddle your baby up, get them (and you) to sleep, and if all goes well, you can wake up to the smell of your very own breakfast burritos.

(Hey if you or your doula don’t have the recipe, here’s My Favorite Breakfast Burrito for you to print or save!)
